How to Check your Refund Status

Once your tax return is submitted to the IRS, it typically takes:

  • 24–48 hours for e-filed returns to be accepted
  • Up to 21 days for most refunds to be issued after acceptance

You can check your refund status anytime using the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool. Here's how:

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Visit: https://www.irs.gov/refunds
  • Provide:
    • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN
    • Your filing status
    • The exact refund amount on your return
  • Click on “Submit” to view your current status

What the Status Messages Mean:

  • Return Received – The IRS has your return and is processing it.
  • Refund Approved – Your refund has been approved and is being prepared for issue.
  • Refund Sent – Your refund has been sent by direct deposit or check.

Delays in Refund Processing?

Refunds may be delayed due to:
  • Incomplete or inaccurate information
  • Additional identity or income verification
  • Claiming certain credits (e.g., Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit) Paper filing instead of e-filing
